BLANTYRE--Duped! That's what has happened to 40 Malawians who have bought vehicles through on-line since 2009.
The Ministry of Foreign and International Cooperation, in a statement published Monday, said the "victims of fraud" have purchased from "dubious car companies outside the country."
The ministry said it was encouraging potential Malawian car buyers to be "very cautious before making internet purchases to avoid being duped by these dubious car dealers."
The Ministry said "where necessary and possible," it will render assistance in verifying the existence and reputation of the companies.
Before foreign exchange shortages hit the country, Malawi used to import over 2,000 second hand vehicles from Dubai and other sources every month.
