iReport: New ATM for Area 23 but residents want banks

Area-23-ATMLILONGWE—Residents of Area 23 in Lilongwe will soon have a new Auto Teller Machine (ATM) which is being installed by the New Building Society.

This will be the second ATM in the area after the one by First Merchant Bank which is inside the People's Store. The new ATM will save some people a trip to Lilongwe Old Town just to withdraw money.

While residents welcome the development, they really are in need of another type of service lost during year’s anti-government demonstrations. Opportunity International Bank of Malawi (OIBM) and the First Merchant Bank (FMB) which used to provide full banking services were targeted as the demonstration turned violent, forcing the banks to close shop.
