The rise of poker in Malawi

Poker CardsAs a past-time, poker playing has risen throughout the world in recent years. There are many reasons for this and not many places have escaped from the growing trend. Malawi is no exception to this gaming success, even though you may not think it was a poker-playing hub of action. In fact, due to the influx of expats into this country, poker has been given a boost and residents are beginning to get the hang of this gambling game.

Malawi's city of Blantyre is a rapidly growing area of the country. In 2002, it gained its first international casino in the form of the Colony Club Casino. This would have been an exciting development for those living in the area, who like to play games like poker on websites such as
Partypoker.com and wanted to also be able to play it in person. Party Poker players can play for real money, but also use the game as a way of practising for casino trips, which as of 2002 Malawi residents could embark upon in their own country. The casino is located in the midst of some gorgeous gardens in the suburbs of Blantyre. The picturesque surroundings compliment a colonial style building, with a sports bar and many other amenities for visitors to enjoy.

The opening of the Colony Club Casino was just the beginning for Malawi. In 2009, KaiRo, the operators of the casino, were able to gain a national Wide Area Progressive gaming licence. This allowed them to open a satellite electronic gaming room in Limbe, Malawi. This is located in the Shire Hotel and is the company's first of its kind. The plan now is to continue expanding such WAP operations all over the country, to bring electronic gaming to many more places.
