BLANTYRE--The son of one of Malawi's prominent human rights and democracy champion, Chakufwa Chihana, has been roped into the Joyce Banda cabinet as Youth and Sports Minister.

Enoch Chakufwa Chihana, an MP for Rumphi central, is a new entrant into cabinet since he joined mainstream politics years ago.

The young Chihana used to be a UDF politician.

He is the second MP after Khwauli Msiska to be an MP. Msiska has also been named deputy minister of economic planning and development.

In the wake of Mutharika’s sudden death, the then ruling DPP politburo tried to upstage Vice President Banda on the premise that she couldn’t take power since she had formed her own party and was a de facto opposition member.

A late-night press conference was organised to announce this position. All the five ministers on the panel, including Information Minister Patricia Kaliati and Local Government Minister Henry Mussa, have missed have been sacked.
