About Sonke Sonke is a South African-based NGO that seeks to strengthen government, civil society and citizen capacity to take action to promote gender equality, prevent domestic and sexual violence and reduce the spread and impact of HIV and AIDS. With a full-time staff of 90 people working from offices in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Agincourt, Sonke’s work reaches across the nation and the continent, as well as the globe. Sonke’s Sexual and Reproductive Health & Rights work
Sonke is involved in a wide range of initiatives and activities which encompass its multi-faceted approach to promoting gender equality, preventing gender-based violence, and reducing the impact of HIV and AIDS. Over the last few years, Sonke has sought to conceptualise and develop its own strategic framework around sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), including a focus on positively engaging men and boys as a means of improving SRHR for men and women, girls and boys. This SRHR framework looks in particular at how the organisation can further strengthening the linkages in its work between HIV and SRH, and between sexual health and reproductive health. Sonke is currently undertaking several SRHR projects with a range of donors, including those that seek to strengthen male involvement in SRHR, as well as gender and family planning within the African region; increasing access to safe abortion services; a national teenage pregnancy prevention campaign; a gender analysis for microbicides introduction; a Wellness Centre in Guguletu, Cape Town, as well as a number of SRHR research initiatives. The SRHR department is currently made up of three staff (including part-time and full-time), and many staff across the organisation are also involved in SRHR activities as part of their ongoing work.
About the position
Sonke is looking for an experienced individual to join the organisation as Sexual and Reproductive Health & Rights (SRHR) Portfolio Manager. This person will play a key role in the development, management and implementation of the organisation’s SRHR work and deliverables, particularly for a USAID and NORAD funded projects. The position will report to the Senior Programmes Specialist responsible for Sonke's International Programmes and its SRHR portfolio. It will have the following main work areas: a) SRHR department management and administration b) Work planning and staff management; c) Project co-ordination; d) Strategic partnerships and Networking; e) Campaign and advocacy strategy development, including the use of media and communications strategies; f) Donor reporting and resource mobilisation; and g) Internal collaboration and supporting other SRHR activities.
