Malawi has no leadership vacancy - Govt

Moses KunkuyuBLANTYRE (MaraPost)—Minister of Information and Civic Education, Moses Kunkuyu has described claims that Malawi government remains without leadership whenever the President is on official duties outside the country as sheer portrayal of ignorance and disregard of the law of the land.

In statement issued Tuesday, Kunkuyu said this shows that some people are refusing to dump the past when Vice Presidents’ offices were reduced to mere spectators and cursed to complete villains.

“Government assures the nation that the current administration and President respect the Office of the Vice President and its functions. To assume that the country faces a leadership vacuum is not only illogical but also misplaced and it is wrong to deprive Malawians of the chance to shape, embrace and appreciate this constitutionally recognized model of leadership which is the beginning of healthy politics for our country,” says Kunkuyu.

The statement further assures Malawians that government has functional offices that take control of national matters in the absence of the Head of State.

“This is contrary to the strange conduct of some past presidents who could go on a month long holiday even when they had completely paralyzed the Office of the Vice President; creating the now-feared leadership vacuum,” claims Kunkuyu.

He appealed to all Malawians as law abiding citizens, to refrain from making statements that seem to disregard the roles of “our constitutionally established bodies.”
