I don’t drink beer or smoke: Mutharika

Bingu-wa-MutharikaBLANTYRE--“I neither drink beer nor smoke,” said President Bingu wa Mutharika when he launched the Presidential Cup at the stadium.

Like a concerned father, Mutharika told the largely youth audience that they should desist from beer and smoking.

He said such habits were hazardous to health because they damage brain cells.

He implored them to be "like Chitsulo cha njanji (steel)” as supporters call him.

"In fact, I don’t consume anything that may damage my body,” the 77-year-old President said. “I am telling you what I do. I can’t lie to you.”

The President also advised the youths to desist from bad behavior that may lead them to be exposed to HIV and AIDS and took a swipe at traditional healers who claim to have found a cure for AIDS, saying the disease has no cure.
