THE family of Malawi’s former president, the late Bingu wa Mutharika, has come out strongly against an inquiry into his death instituted by Pres Joyce Banda. Following his death from a heart attack April 5, there was suspense as the government appeared to be holding back information on what actually was going on. While hospital sources said he was dead, the government said he was being airlifted to South Africa for treatment, giving the impression that he was still alive. The date of his death is also in dispute and there have been rumours about what he was doing the morning he died with one going as far as suggesting that he had a sexual encounter not with his wife before he went into cardiac arrest.
We hereby reproduce the statement from the late president’s family:
We the bereaving clan of the late President Ngwazi Dr Bingu wa Mutharika are shocked to be told that an announcement has been made regarding the establishment of a Commission of inquiry into the death of our beloved late relation. We want to put it on record that we the bereaving family did not at any point request a commission of inquiry, why would we do that when we know all the facts surrounding the death of our late beloved. In the bible book of John, Chapter 8 Verse 32, Jesus taught us that "ye shall know the truth and the truth shall set ye free" as a clan we are free, so too is our beloved Bingu wa Mutharika, and many Malawians who understand what he stood for. We therefore do not approve the establishment of this commission. We the bereaving clan, wish to inform all Malawians that we were not consulted regarding this commission , as such we will not be party to a process that undermines our traditional rights and authority as custodians of late Presidents self- respect and memory. It is our sincere prayer that the late Presidents name and dignity will not be dragged into political duplicity that has nothing to do with establishing "The Truth"This Christian clan will not be party to any Satanic machinations that seek to use our beloved relation's death to advance personal and political agendas. We the bereaving clan, will soon be making arrangements with relevant public institutions to provide an opportunity for scholars, students and researchers to study how President Ngwazi Dr Bingu wa Mutharika lived his life, his philosophies and what he really stood for.We the bereaving family, sincerely thank all those who mourned with us. We are overwhelmed. The late President Ngwazi Dr Bingu wa Mutharika is currently resting at his favorite place Ndata Farm. Just let him rest in peace.----
