LILONGWE—There’s concern that some reporters and their organisations are misrepresenting what is happening in parliament.
Reacting to a report which said Speaker of Parliament had stopped a debate on the detention of former attorney general and human rights activist Ralph Kasambara after a court had ordered his release, Henry Chimunthu Banda says he didn’t do such a thing.
He says he was waiting for the relevant minister to come to the House and address the issue.
"The other time a member for Nkhata Bay Northwest came into my office in distress; she was affected by a newspaper report. This is something that should be avoided," Banda said.
The Media Committee of Parliament works with media organisations as part of ongoing dialogue but the Speaker said his office has powers to intervene when coverage of parliament deviates from standard practice: telling the truth of what happened.
