BLANTYRE--Tensions were high at Kamuzu Central Hospital in the capital, Lilongwe, as Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika was taken in after sources said he suffered from what appeared to he a heart attack.
Hospital Administrator Tom Chisale refused to comment but hospital sources say the 78-year-old economist-turned politician arrived at the hospital with his brother, Foreign Affairs Minister Peter Mutharika, and State House Chief of Staff Edward Sawerengera.
"He was wheeled into the Intensive Care Unit. First Lady Callista and three of the President's four children are also here," said one source.
Health Minister Jean Kalirani, police chief Peter Mukhito and several Members of Parliament were seen pacing around hospital corridors. The hospital has virtually been cordoned off with people trying to enter the hospital turned away.
An MP told MaraPost: "I'm told things are bad but we have been asked not to speak to journalists."
