Family mourning Mutharika for 40 days

BLANTYRE—Mourning doesn’t end with burial. The family of the late president Bingu wa Mutharika will mourn their son for 40 days.

“On the 40th day we will celebrate the life of our child and we will hold a service where we will remember our son,” family spokesperson Charles Namondwe said.

He said they had decided to go beyond the 10 days the government had set as the mourning period for Mitharika who died following a heart attack on April 5.

Malawi’s new president Joyce Banda ordered that all the gifts – food and non-food items - that had been received from Pres Armando Guebuza of Mozambique to be sent to Ndata Farm where the president was buried April 23 and the family will continue to gather for 40 days.

Banda urged Malawian to remember the good things the late president did while in office.

To err is human, she said.
