RUMPHI--There was drama at Phwezi Boys Secondary School when the headmaster and the boarding crew descended on students who were charging their cell phones using bulb holders and they managed to confiscate over 70 of them.
 
According to the headmaster, Mr. Emmanuel Tomoka, charging phones using bulb holders is risky.
 
“When I went into one of the hostels at mid night, I was stunned to see thick smoke erupting from the roof because one student had connected his phone to naked wires,” explained Mr. Tomoka during one of the assemblies.

He bemoaned this conduct because rules are clear that no student should possess a phone.

One of the prefects, who didn’t want to be mentioned, said that most students were using the phones to call their girlfriends during mtolo time. It was a student who tipped off the headmaster who sought help from other teachers to confiscate the phones.
 
Mr. Wyson Chiputa Gondwe, who is deputy boarding master at the school, said that the exercise was necessary to curb indiscipline.

“Our students used to communicate with their friends and parents at home. Sometimes they could lie to their parents that they are sick,” said Gondwe adding that parents could come to see them only to discover that they were not sick at all.                                 
 
Gondwe also said that students could also make calls to girl friends from a sister school (Phwezi Girls Secondary School) which wasn’t acceptable.

The confiscated phones will be be returned to the students at the end of the term.
