40 arrested in police sweep through Blantyre

BLANTYRE--Police in Blantyre have arrested 40 suspects and seized items following a sweeping exercise conducted in Manase and Chiromoni townships.

Assistant Public Relations Officer for Blantyre Police, Sergeant Lameck Thembachako told the Malawi News Agency (Mana) that the exercise was done a day before  July 6 independence celebrations.

He said the public by tipping off police.

“Some of the suspects decided to desert their merchandise and ran away,” he said.

Among the recovered items are DVD players, TV screens, Amplifiers and cellphones.

“Of the 40, 6 will answer charges of robbery, 14 will answer charges of rogue and vagabond while 20 will be charged for being found in possession of property suspected to have been stolen,” said Thembachako.

He said investigations were underway to link the recovered goods to the owners who had lodged their complaints to police at various times.
