3 dead, 43 hurt in Mzuzu bus accident, driver at large

MZUZU--Three people are dead and 43 injured after a bus travelling from Lilongwe to Mzuzu overturned at about 2:00 am Thursday, police say.
 
The bus which belongs to National Bus Company crashed after its driver failed to negotiate a corner at Kadikechi Trading Centre which is about 15 kilometres from Mzuzu City.

Mzuzu Police Spokesperson Sergeant Maurice Chapola said nine of the 43 people sustained serious injuries.

Police suspect the driver, a Mr. Fabiano, who is at large, was driving over the speed limit.

Only two of the three dead have been identified. They are Waleni Chikhutu of Traditional Authority Mtema in Dowa district and Praise Mhango from Makunganya Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mwilang`ombe in Karonga.

Police are advising all motorists to exercise caution when operating vehicles.
