LILONGWE—A land owner in the newly developing Area 49 Dubai in Mvama, Lilongwe had a rude awakening Tuesday when members of a family he’d allowed to stay on his piece of land demanded more from him.

This was after the wife of the man had passed away.

"What happened is strange. The family that was assisted with a place to stay and never paid any rent to the land owner, demanded that he should pay for the coffin and transportation to Mangochi where burial was to take place," an eyewitness said.

Attempts by a local leader to dissuade the family from demanding more from the generous land owner proved futile.

The bereaved family insisted they had to take the remains to Mangochi and the Good Samaritan parted with MK40, 000.
