SALIMA--Hundreds of secondary school teachers in the central east education division haven’t yet received their salaries for the month of August and threatened to stop teaching if the issue isn't resolved by Friday this week.

An officer from human resources department at the division only identified as Mr. Kaunda confirmed the late payment which he said was due to an error.

"We understand that there are some teachers in the division who are not yet paid, their names were accidentally skipped," Kaunda said. "We have taken note of skipped names and they’ve been sent for salary processing, these teachers should expect their salaries to be ready within this week."

However some concerned teachers in Salima say this isn’t the first time for this to happen. They said they experienced the same problem in July salaries.

"We received July salaries on 12th August and some on 16th and we didn't except [this to happen again]. It’s very unfortunate that this is coming amid dangerous effects of devaluation we are currently experiencing," a teacher said.

The teacher went on: "We’re surviving on soft loans and things are not working at all. Our salaries are already very pathetic …we receive them very late and the government expects students to perform well during national exams.  That's practically impossible!”
