3 Malawians nabbed after being found with 15 bags of Indian hemp

BLANTYRE—Potent Malawi chamba or Indian hemp does fetch a bundle for dealers.

But being found in possession of Chamba is a crime and three people have been nabbed in Kasungu for being found in possession of 15 bags of Chamba, each weighing 90 kilos.

The street value of the haul was not immediately known, but according to the Malawi News Agency, the three people, identified by Kasungu police, are Chikumbutso Kamwendo (23), Madalitso Butao (25) and William Mussa (24).

They were nabbed Sunday night at Kazimatchire Trading Centre in the district by police officers who were on patrol and found the bags which were in a minibus registration.

The three are said to have told police that they bought the hemp at Kanjuchi in Mzimba district and were transporting it to Lilongwe.

They will be charged with found in possession of Indian hemp without permission.

Malawi chamba is a hot commodity outside the country because of its potency.
