MZUZU--The People’s Party (PP) on Sunday launched its campaign for the Mzimba South West bye-elections in Inkosi ya Makosi Mbelwa’s area.
Party Vice President Khumbo Kachali, who is also Malawi’s vice president, said the party was asking the people to vote for Raymond Chatima Nkhata after winning the primary last month.
“After serving you faithfully that you elected me in 2004 and 2009, the State President Mrs. Joyce Banda decided to Honour people in this area by appointing me to this High Office, it became necessary that we choose. I ask you to join me in saying thank you to the president by voting for Nkhata,” said Kachali.
The Vice President said the administration was working to rebuild the economy ruined by the erstwhile DPP-led administration which lost power following the death Pres Bingu wa Mutharika in April.
Kachali said Nkhata, whose father was a parliamentarian in the area before, was the only candidate for the Peoples Party and no independents should claim that they have support of the party.
Inkosi ya Makosi Mbelwa said the people of Mzimba South West and the rest of the Northern Region had sent chiefs to thank Pres Joyce Banda for honouring their own son to assume the Vice Presidency and that the bye-elections were one way the people will show their support to the President by voting for her candidate.
“We aren’t talking politics; we are talking continuation of development in this area. As a Parliament, the Vice President achieved a lot here, we want that to continiue and only a candidate from Government will deliver on our aspirations,” said the Inkosi ya Makosi.
During the rally, Chitipa South MP Chimango Mughogho-Gondwe announced that she’d joined PP, saying DPP was taking too long to change after Pres Mutharika’s death.
“It is a like a vehicle that has broken down, you start looking for mechanic or ways to replace it. I looked at the leadership after the break down…up to now there is nothing new or proper direction that would help Malawians,” said Mughogho-Gondwe, who served in the Mutharika administration as a deputy minister.
The launch of the PP bye-election campaign was also attended by Secretary General Henry Chibwana, Treasurer General Harry Mkandawire, National Director of Women Clara Makungwa and National Campaign Director Kalanzi Mbewe. Also present at the rally was Malawi Democratic Party President Kamlepo Kalua.
