Mzimba by-elections results Wednesday

electionsBLANTYRE--The Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) says results of Tuesday’s by-elections in Mzimba South West and Mzimba Central constituencies will be released Wednesday, October 10, 2012.

Speaking Tuesday in an interview, Mec Commissioner Bishop Bernard Malango said counting of votes will begin Tuesday evening as polling centres will be closed at 6pm.

Malango expressed contentment with the voter turnout, describing it “very encouraging in as far as participation of voters in election is concerned.”

The Commissioner said they've made a makeshift tally centre in the district where ballot papers from all the polling stations will be counted in presence of all observers including the district commissioner.

“Counting of votes, will likely start soon after closing all polling stations at 6 pm. Turn out has been very impressive and this only shows that people were ready for the by-elections,” said Malango.

Four candidates, Raymond Nkhata of Peoples’ Party (PP), Ronald Chavula of Democratic Progressive Party (DDP), and independents James Nthara and Baxter Mzunda are contesting for Mzimba South West constituency whereas Mzimba Central has the following six candidate, Owen Mkandawire (DPP), Aram Beza (PP), Enita Wezi Njolwa (Aford), Bonifasio Ngulube (National Rainbow Coalition), and independents Joseph Mabvuto Kachali and Denis Kandodo Mvula.
