
BLANTYRE--Lilongwe city assembly chief Kelvin Mmangisa, arrested in connection with K23 million he illegally pocketed as part of his salary perks, doesn’t understand he worked for three years only to be accused now.
According to the Daily Times, Mmangisa, who worked under a contract signed with the ministry of Local Government, has been charged for abuse of office because he claimed an extra payment of K660, 000 per month apart from his official monthly salary of K625, 000.
From this sum, K252, 000 was for fuel, K100, 000 as house allowance and other claims for telephone, a cook and a gardener.
He is also accused of pocketing allowances for a trip to Italy which he never undertook.
But the CEO told the daily the timing of the accusations was suspicious.
Mmangisa is known as the architect of fundraising golf tournaments for the Silver Grey Foundation founded by the late president Bingu wa Mutharika who appointed him.
Mutharika used to appear in the popular tournaments which raised money for the elderly people.
