NKHOTA-KOTA--Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Member of Parliament for Nkhotakota Central constituency Edwin Banda Monday wants to contest the presidency in 2014.
Asked on whether his ambition was realistic in the face of other veteran members of his party, the MP had this to say:
“Being a Malawian citizen and a lawyer, I aspire to be a president and I don’t want somebody to block me from achieving my ambition. How to [do] that is another issue but it’s my right to aspire for presidency.”
Banda said he was qualified to be president and currently has K2 million to finance a campaign if he chose to run.
“I have not currently started campaign but once I start, I will shake the ground. Whether I will compete during the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) convention depends on circumstances and what happens between now and 2014,” he said.
The parliamentarian said he has good ideas but never shared them with the previous governments because they never listened. He added that he is yet to make a judgment on the current government.
“Since taking over from the previous government, there is nothing to accuse the current government on and at the same time there is nothing to commend. I don’t subscribe to the idea that the current government should be given time to effect their plans. I think we should just allow the current government to rule and not giving them time,” he said.
Banda took over from Clement Stambuli as MP for Nkhotakota Central in 2009 under MCP ticket.
