MZUZU--Malawi's ruling People’s Party's (PP) first ever convention is underway in Blantyre.
Making the opening speech this morning, Pres Joyce Banda, who is unopposed as president of the party after her challenger withdrew from contesting, said “democracy has come to stay and democracy in Malawi has matured”.
She narrated the challenges which PP faced during formation and thanked some notable individuals who included Samson Msosa, Lawrence Mpofu and Paul Maulidi for enduring the storm until the party was fully established and recognised in the country.
Leaders from opposition parties who included Wakuda Kamanga (DPP) Kamlepo Kalua (MDP), Mark
Katsonga (PPM) Gwanda Chakuamba (NRP) and Sam Mpasu (UDF) also attended the official opening of the convention.
The delegates at the convention being held at the College of Medicine are expected to elect three vice presidents responsible for the party’s leadership from Northern, Central and Southern provinces.
