Malawi ruling People’s Party’s first acid test in Mzimba

BLANTYRE--By just looking at the line-up, political pundits are tipping the People's Party to win the October 9 bye-elections in Mzimba Central and Mzimba South East.

"The PP will use its government machinery to win the elections. It will be its first acid test," a politcal commentator said after the Malawi Electoral Commission on Wednesday published names of the contestants.

The battle will be between the governing PP and its archrival Democratic Progressive Party.

In Mzimba Central, Arama Beza will represent PP, while Owen Mkandawire is the DPP man. Bonfancio Nguluwe is the New Rainbow Coalition rep, while Enita Njolwa will stand for the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD). Joseph Kachali and Dennis Mvula are the independents.

In Mzimba South Eest, the main contestants are Raymond Chatima Nkhata of PP and Leonard Chavula of the DPP. James Nthara and Baxter Manzunda are the independents.

MEC said campaign period will end on October 7 at 6pm.
