BLANTYRE—One hundred and twenty newly recruited secondary school teachers in the south west education division haven’t been paid for over three months now despite reporting to their respective duty stations early in April this year.
Amongst the 120 teachers, only 17 appeared on the June payroll of which 14 had their names with wrong account numbers, a development that raises a number of questions.
There is a feeling among teachers that some officials at the division are playing games as they refused to discuss with teachers how to resolve the matter. Asked on whether the 14 teachers could access their salaries directly from the banks, a human resource officer for the division alluded that currently there's a stop order on this from the Accountant General issued to banks, which didn’t convince the disgruntled teachers as in the past when there was such an incident, teachers simply went inside the back to collect their pay.
As of today, all newly recruited secondary school teachers from all other divisions have been paid yet those of south west education division don’t know where their next meal is going to come from.
