
BLANTYRE--National Bus Company driver Fabiano Juma thought he was smart when the bus his he was driving overturned and three passengers died on the spot.
He bolted and after two weeks, the long arm of the law found him. Police in Mzimba confirmed to the Malawi News Agency (MANA) of this development.
Mzuzu Police publicist Maurice Chapola told MANA the 49-year-old Juma was detained at Lusangazi Road Block near Mzuzu after a tip-off.
But this was after a fruitless of each passing vehicle at the roadblock until Juma was found in a vehicle which hasn’t been identified.
Chapola was quoted by MANA as saying Juma will be charged with several charges which will include failure to report an accident within 24 hours, failure to render assistance to victims after an accident and causing death by reckless driving.
Statistics show that four people die in road accidents everyday in Malawi, one of the highest rates in southern Africa.
Most accidents are caused by reckless driving and vehicles not fit to be on the roads.
