Former Malawi diplomat Kalinde is new MHRC chief

Sophie-KalindeBLANTYRE--Malawi’s former ambassador to Switzerland, Sophie Kalinde, has been elected chairperson for the state-funded Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC), a position last held by outspoken consumer rights activist, John Kapito whose tenure ended early this year.

The Daily Times quoted Commissioner Marshal Chilanga as saying that a meeting was held where Kalinde was elected for the top post.

“All I can say is that we had a meeting and we elected Sophie Kalinde who has previously served as a commissioner and was in her second term and, possibly, final term. She has accepted her position and all the commissioners wish her good luck,” the paper quotes Chilanga.

Kalinde could not be reached for comment as she was reportedly out of the country.

Kapito chaired the commission for two terms. He was quite critical of the Democratic Progressive Party regime, prompting the then State President late Bingu Wa Mutharika accusing him openly at public rallies of canvassing for the country’s presidency.
