LILONGWE—Police aren't above the law, National Police Spokesperson Davie Chingwalu said on Thursday, responding to an incident where an officer shot himself to death.
He said if Constable Donald Phiri was alive, he would’ve been prosecuted for for attempted murder.
On Sunday, Phiri, who was on duty with his a fellow police office at Mvera road block in Dowa, left his colleague and went into a waiting room where he shot himself to death.
Phiri was found dead with a gun-shot wound by his colleague.
“Just like any other person, police officers can also be dragged to court if they break the law. We are very concerned with the death of Constable Phiri,” Chingwalu said. “Police officers aren’t above the law.”
He added: “The public shouldn’t be alarmed with the shooting; we have taken serious measures to ensure there is discipline in the police service.”
