MZUZU--Vice president Khumbo Kachali has attacked criics who accuse him and Pres Joyce Banda of spending too much time on the road and not in office attending to the country's many challenges.
.
Speaking at a function where he officially opened a multimillion telecentre at Lupaso on Karonga on Thursday, a visibly angry Kachali said he and Pres Banda travel on government business.
“As long as we are serving, we will never stop visiting you Malawians, anywhere where chiefs want us to go, we will be there," said Kachali. "They say, 'you are travelling excessively’; do we travel to your mothers’ homes? Aaah! The president is travelling too much. The president and her Vice are always together. Did you want them to be sitting in your mother and father's homes? Do you want your mothers and fathers to be the ones travelling? Shame on you!"
Back on business of the day, Kachali said government wants ICT services available across the country.
“Information is a potential tool to change lives for the better and move people out of poverty,’’ Kachali said.
There has been concern that government doesn't practice what it preaches.
When this year's budget was presented, government said only important travel would continue to save tax payer's money.
When Pres Banda was initially criticised for excess overseas travel, she said she would delegate some of the functions to Vice Pres Kachali.
Banda's predecessor, Bingu wa Mutharika who died in April, liked to travel and always pushed back hard against criticism that his trips were a drain on the economy.
