Local govt. ministry official accused of cashing in on Joyce Banda portraits

BLANTYRE--A woman known as Edith Mtunga is allegedly behind a big fraud at the Ministry of Local Government where she is claiming big monies for portraits of the Pres Joyce Banda when she never supplied them.

A report in Malawi News showed that Mtunga supplied 50 portraits to four district councils of Mchinji, Salima, Balaka and Mangochi.

The portraits are bought at K1, 000 each from the Ministry of Information but these are being charged at K8, 800 more to the councils.

Several district commissioners collaborated that indeed they got the portraits on invoices whose name appeared as Chalechera Enterprises.

But Mtunga denied supplying the portraits, saying "you must be mistaken."

A district commissioner from Kasungu, Harrison Lende, confirmed his office got 50 portraits from the Local Government Ministry and were being pushed for payment from people whom they have never worked with before.

Gaston Macheka, a DC from Mchinji, said they’d already paid Chalechera Enterprises, while Salima District Council has just been invoiced K392,000 for the portraits.
