LILONGWE--The Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi and the Medical Council of Malawi (MCM) are reportedly probing the circumstances that led to the death of one patient following the closure of the intensive care unit at Zomba Central Hospital.
The intensive care unit at the Eastern Regional referral hospital was abruptly closed after some nurses and midwives refused to work overtime because of outstanding locum allowances.
Sources at the hospital have told MaraPost that officials from the two bodies will be visiting the hospital to investigate.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source said they expect disciplinary action on wrong doers.
“We are following the issue and health workers to be found in the wrong will be disciplined. Any act that will be justified contrary to the regulations will warrant disciplinary action,” said the source.
