BLANTYRE—Malawi’s Ombudsman, Tujilane Chizumila, who was arrested over theft and abuse of office accusations, has been released.
Police also released Ellos Lodzeni, an executive director in her office, after hours of questioning.
The two were arrested Friday morning for allegedly pocketing external allowances for a trip to Zambia which she never undertook whereas Lodzeni was nabbed for employing two people without the approval of the board, according to sources.
The arrest of the two reportedly irked employees in her office, saying the police shouldn’t have arrested Chizumila, claiming the issue was being handled internally as advised by the office of the National Assembly.
It’s yet to be known whether the police will pursue the case.
