Police hunting student activist Chasowa assailants

Robert ChasowaBLANTYRE--Malawi Police say they have set up teams to investigate and prosecute those responsible for the death of Polytechnic engineering student Robert Chasowa found dead on campus last year.

The teams will also hunt the killers of the “20 July demonstrators, according to National Police deputy spokesperson Kelvin Maigwa.

The law enforcers have set up a five member team to investigate the murder of Chasowa and this follow recommendations of the commission of inquiry which found out that student activist was murdered, contradicting earlier reports that he committed suicide.

The Deputy National Police Spokesperson also indicated another seven member team has been entrusted with the duty of investigating the circumstances that led to the death of 19 people during the July 20 anti-government demonstrations last year.

The teams, working in collaboration with the Director of Public Prosecutions, started working on Sunday, October 14, 2012.

The teams haven't been given time frame but the Commission of Inquiry on Chasowa asked for accelerated conclusion of the matter.
