BLANTYRE--The Mulanje Magistrate Court has ordered Petros Sembere to pay K100, 000 fine or in default serve an 18 month custodial sentence for reckless driving.
The court heard that on December 25 last year, Sembere hit to death a 11-year-old boy at Nanjiwa Trading Centre as he was travelling from Migowi in the district.
Before passing judgment, Magistrate Felix Mandala observed that the driver was reckless because he didn't reduce speed when he approached the trading centre. The magistrate also observed that road accidents caused by reckless driving were increasing despite Malawi Road Safety Council's efforts sensitizing drivers and all road users to be responsible.
The K100,000 punishment is meant to punish the offender and also teach other motorists.
Msembere was subsequently taken to Mulanje Prison for failing to pay the court fine.
