BLANTYRE—Justice Mponda, a journalist for Malawi Voice, an online publication, has been charged with three counts of insulting the president, false publication and criminal libel.
"The issues are to do with stories about JB [Pres Joyce Banda] resigning and Tanzanian High Commissioner being declared persona non grata," Anthony Kasunda, chair of the local chapter of the Media Institute for Southern Africa (MISA), wrote on a MISA-sponsored forum for journalists.
“He looks to be in good spirits," Kasunda added, and he was told by Justice himself that it was a "peaceful arrest" when police stormed his house in Limbe.
When this report was filed, the journalist was being transferred to police headquarters in the Malawi capital, Lilongwe.
