Against the background of mother's day holiday which we celebrated yesterday, commentators have expressed reservations on the number of holidays that we observe in Malawi. The argument is that in Malawi, we have too many holidays and these affect the socio-economic development of the country as production is brought to a halt during these days.
They noted that some of the holidays in Malawi are irrelevant. For instance, the commentators singled out Chilembwe day and Martyrs day as duplicates which would otherwise be celebrated at once as they serve the same purpose.
As a matter of debate and cognizant of the work we must all do to revive our ailing economy, do you think Malawians observe too many holidays which have the potential to slow down production? Should we scrap off some of these holidays considered as duplicates and irrelevant?
