Catholic University of Malawi shuts down indefinitely

CUNIMA students in demonstration moodHAPPENING NOW

MZUZU--Catholic University of Malawi (CUNIMA) has been closed prematurely following continued threats by students to hold demonstrations over water shortage at the institution.

College authorities have since ordered the students to leave the campus.

One student who spoke on condition of anonymity told MaraPost in a telephone interview said the shortage of water reached a critical stage and that management at the university wasn't helpful.

He said last month the students demonstrated and presented a petition to college authorities over the issue but there had been no progress.

"You know what, we pay a lot of money but just imagine, they keep on telling us that they are still a young university (6 years old) hence cannot solve these problems just overnight. Is this fair?

"When we want to demonstrate to express our grievances over this insensitivity in handling important issues, they shut down the institution, is this the way to solve problems?" the student said.

Catholic University is located in Ngulidi, Chiradzulo.
