Mzuzu university students reduced to primary pupils

Desk problems at Mzuzu UniversityMZUZU--Incredible! Hit by a shortage of desks,  Mzuzu University students are being forced to use their laps when writing instead, a development that hasn't gone down well with the students at the college.

Speaking to MaraviPost in an exclusive interview, Student Union President Abel Phompho labeled the situation as the sign that tertiary education at the college is dwindling.

He said students pursuing engineering and geography programs are having problems to do their work as they need desks to draw.

“It is unheard of for students, university students for that matter, to write exams on their thighs as if they are standard one primary school pupils.

“Students are complaining the situation on the ground has the potential to adversely affect them,” said Phompho.

The Student Union President was however quick to send SOS to the corporate world to assist the institution with desks.

"We cannot pretend as if all is rosy, we have a pathetic situation here,” he added.

Phompho commended The Press Trust and Fedex Company for furnishing the college’s cafeteria with tables and chairs.

Assistant Academic Affairs Registrar James Kwilimbe attributed the problem to increased number of students and lack of funds, hence failure to purchase more desks.

He also urged the corporate world to assist the institution with desks.
