BLANTYRE--Business Consult Africa (BCA) says it is a shame that Malawi, which attained independence July 1964, still depends on Western countries for budgetary and development support.
BCA Executive Director Henry Kachaje spoke Thursday during the launch of the Entrepreneurship Revolution at Comesa Hall in Blantyre.
“Thirty three years ago, Malawi was economically better off than China and Japan but today these two countries are financing and supporting Malawi.
“It’s a shame that our parliamentarians deliberate and make laws in the August house which was donated by the people of China. Malawi should have been the country assisting other countries not us going around knocking on western countries doors,” said Kachaje.
He faulted government’s short growth strategies such as the Malawi Growth Strategy and Development, claiming they are meaningless and not beneficial to Malawians.
He said the Chinese are where they are today because of the economy growth plan they put in place some 30 years ago.
“Our leaders do not have the vision and they do not know even the direction they have taken. Maybe my colleagues you heard government’s vision and goals it wants to achieve in the coming years,” asserted Kachaje.
Chief Executive Officer of FDH Financial Holdings Limited, Thomson Mpinganjira told the audience that entrepreneurship is the key to Malawi’s economic growth and prosperity.
He gave examples of developed economies where successful companies were started by individuals who were entrepreneurs.
“Business Consult Africa says it is privileged to lead the entrepreneurship revolution in Malawi through a five-year program that seeks to recruit, organize, train, mentor, coach, inspire, motivate and support 200,000 entrepreneurs, both existing and potential, to help them establish, develop and grow their own businesses, each with the potential of creating five jobs on average, and collectively creating 1,000,000 jobs by December 31, 2017,” said Mpinganjira.
He said this was not a far-fetched dream, justifying that 54 percent of the taxpayers in a developed economy like USA are employed by small business.
