BLANTYRE--Students at Chancellor College, a constituent college of the University of Malawi (Unima), on Wednesday petitioned Pres Joyce Banda over the hike in tuition fees for government sponsored and self-sponsored students.
Government recently raised the fees from K25 000 to K55 000 for government sponsored and from about K100 000 to K250 000 for self-sponsored students.
The students argue that most students will withdraw from the college because they can't afford to pay.
On Wednesday the students marched, while chanting anti-Joyce Banda songs, from the college campus to the Zomba district commissioner’s office where they delivered the petition.
“We plead with your excellency to act with speed because if these grievances are not addressed, it will mean that many students will have to withdraw since over 70 percent cannot, under the present conditions, manage to register,” reads the petition in part.
