OG Isa Plastics’ Asif charged with assaulting employees

BLANTYRE--Police in Limbe have arrested a businessman of Asian origin who is part owner of OG Isa Plastics on allegations that he beat up five of his employees on Thursday last week.

An employee who identified himself as Phiri claimed to have seen the assault.

“This is not the first time he has done this and most of the times he gets away with it,” said Phiri.

A police report from Limbe confirmed Isa Asif's arrest. He has been charged with assault.

“People are angry at how these bosses treat us,” said Phiri who suspects fellow employees had complained about their pay of K1, 000 a month and K150 house allowance which is hardly enough to cover basic needs.

He said after the incident, the five downed their tools and they reported their boss to police who, in an effort to diffuse the tension, told the employees to go home and return to work on Monday.

Timothy Kaleso, an officer at the Ministry of Labour, said he had received the allegations of abuse at OG Isa Plastics and they were investigating the matter.
