Rev. Ngwira, busted over graft allegations, released on bail

Rev-Christopher-NgwiraMZUZU--The High Court in Mzuzu Thursday released on bail Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) regional governor for the north, Rev. Christopher Ngwira.

Rev. Ngwira, who is also Member of Parliament for Mzimba Hora, was arrested Wednesday for allegedly misappropriating Constituency Development Fund.

High Court Judge Justice Dingiswayo Madise granted bail in his Chambers after hearing arguments from state lawyer Waliko Nkosi and defence lawyer Victor Gondwe.

Gondwe, from John Tennyson and Associates, told Mana after the bail hearing that the court ordered the release of his client from police custody by Friday noon on condition that he deposited the sum of K100, 000 as bail bond.

Rev. Ngwira was also ordered to produce two sureties who must pay an amount of K500, 000, not cash, and that he should surrender his passport.

“He has ordered that he should be reporting to Mzimba Police Station once every two weeks,” the defence lawyer said.

The suspect who is yet to be charged wasn’t in court when the judge announced his decision. He was being held at Mzimba Police Station.
