Court fines men for practicing witchcraft; orders bag of charms destroyed

NKHATA-BAY—A court in Nkhata Bay has ordered three men to pay fines for practicing witchcraft.

John Ng’oma was ordered to K45, 000 by a magistrate court for hiring two men who claim to be witchdoctors to use their powers to "fortify" a disputed land with the aim of causing harm to a man he had beef with.

The court also ordered the two witch doctors Michael Juwawo and Brighton Mbewe to pay a fine of K20, 000 for practicing witchcraft which is contrary to the Witchcraft Act.

The court heard that Ng’oma and Chirwa had been at loggerheads over a piece of land. Ng’oma said banana and orange tree plants on the land belong to him, while Chirwa claimed ownership of potatoes plants on the same land.

Ng’oma alleged before a packed courtroom that Chirwa and others had been stealing his fruits thus he engaged the services of two witchdoctors to protect his property from Chirwa.

The court heard that as Ng’oma and his two witchdoctors were in the process of doing their rituals, they were spotted by Chirwa’s employees who apprehended the three men and beat them up.

First Grade Magistrate Billy Wamkaya Ngosi noted in his ruling the law doesn’t recognise witchcraft and that such practices put other individuals, like Chirwa, in danger.

Out of the total of $95, 000 the three men were fined, K75, 000 will be paid as compensation to Chirwa.

Magistrate Ngosi further ordered that a bag full of magic charms belonging to the two witchdoctors be destroyed.
