Malawi arrests 47 Ethiopians in Chitipa

BLANTYRE--Some 47 Ethiopians have been arrested by police in Chitipa for illegal entry into Malawi.

The Daily Times quoted police as saying the Ethiopians had entered the country through Nyika National Park.

Police, acting on a tip-off, intercepted a three-tonner registered KA 5491 carrying the uninvited guests.

Police believe some Malawians aided the foreigners to illegally enter the country.

The 47 are being detained at Chitipa police station.

Ethiopians, running away from poverty back home, take advantage of porous Malawi borders to enter the country en-route to economic giant South Africa. Recently, 47 of them drowned in Lake Malawi after their boat capsized.
