MZUZU—A 40-year-old man has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour (IHL) for defiling a five-year-old girl.
Police Prosecutor Sergeant Lyson Kachikondo told Senior Resident Magistrate Kondwani Banda in Mzuzu that Levi Mkandawire of Enguzgeni Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mtwalo in Mzimba District enticed the girl with K20 to buy biscuits. After the girl returned from the store, the man defiled her.
Mkandawire was arrested after the victim’s mother reported the matter to police, the court heard.
In mitigation, the convict asked the court for lenience, saying his was in bad health.
But his wish wasn’t granted. The court handed Mkandawire 10 years in jail to pay for mistake. Banda said the sentence should serve as a deterrent against would-be offenders.
