DOWA--The Chakhaza Second Grade Magistrate Court in Dowa has sentenced a 33-year-old man to five years imprisonment with hard labour for stealing a police stamp, according Malawi News Agency reports.
It said John Kamphenga, who was arrested by officers from Mponela Police Station, stole the official police stamp on August 23 this year when he was taking back his belongings from a police officer after being granted bail on an offence of cattle theft.
Police were tip off by the general public that Kamphenga was in possession of the stamp which was recovered from the suspect’s house.
Kamphenga didn’t just want the stamp to keep as a souvenir. He told the court he wanted to start issuing fake travelling permits to cattle rustlers and other criminals.
Not too smart.
Passing sentence, Second Grade Magistrate Ken Chidzanja said Kamphenga’s conduct would have tarnished the image of the Malawi Police Service hence the stiff punishment so others could also learn from it.
