BLANTYRE--Police in Phalombe district have arrested four men in connection with the trafficking of 14 children who were being taken to Mozambique farms.

The children, all boys, are aged between 10 and 18, hail from Zomba district.

Police say they managed to intercept the children following a tip-off from members of the community as they were being transported by cyclists to Malawi’s neighboring country, Mozambique.

Phalombe Police Publicist Augustus Nkhwazi said the suspects convinced children’s parents they had jobs for the children in Mozambique.

Nkhwazi identified the four as James Martin, 31, Dickson Kambewa, 37, James Banda, 23 and Daniel Thumpwa 21, who are expected to appear before the Phalombe magistrate court to answer the charge of Child Trafficking contrary to Child Care, Protection and Justice Act.

He said all suspects do piece work in Mozambique and claimed they were asked to bring children with them to work.
