Is Corruption in Malawi inevitable and unstoppable? Transparency International, the global corruption busters, don't think so; and neither do we at The Maravi Post.

Corruption is the antithesis of sustainable development. It gets in the way of everything: education, health, agriculture and in general negatively impacts the government’s service provision efforts, blocking a potential ticket out of poverty for millions of people.

It can mean that people lack access to clean water or a toilet, or die in child birth at home because the government can’t afford to buy drugs for hospitals or to pay salaries for health workers. In short, corruption in Malawi is a matter of life and death.

If money, be it our own taxes or donor funds, intended to move Malawi from one of the poorest countries on earth with 65% of Malawi's 12 million people scrapping a living on less than $1 U.S. dollar a day is lost to corruption, we’re all in serious trouble.

Question time:

*What does the Maravi Post want to do about this?

*What can you, as Malawians or as non-Malawians with Malawi at heart, do about it? and

*Indeed, how can you contribute to efforts designed to rid Malawi of corruption?

Toothless Bulldog Named ACB:

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) is mandated to fight corruption in Malawi via the Republican Constitution. The bureau however faces various challenges and limitations, even when one removes undue political influence and interference from the scene.

What other options exist for the ordinary man and woman suffering day and night from the effects of corruption?

This is where we (you and us) come in.

The least that we, at the Maravi Post can do is to provide a vibrant forum for Malawians to:

* Share experiences;

* Report for investigation and publishing of any corrupt practices you encounter at work, business, school or in interacting with public officials; and

*Debate on corruption.

Maravi Post Corruption Watch believes that it is by exposing corruption that pressure will be brought to bear on various officials. Due to pressure and exposure they will avoid being corrupt. Again, public demand will force the government to take the necessary measures to stop corruption and punish corrupt officials.
Power to the people:

The Maravi Post has always believed that power in Malawi lies with the people. Knowing that if Malawians are informed, engaged, and empowered; Corruption will not stand a chance in Malawi is why we have started this initiative.

To join the debate or share experience or to report corruption and ring the death knell for this social evil, write to “Integrity Malawi” at the Maravi Post.

If you provide evidence or enough to go on, the Maravi Post Corruption Watch will not hesitate to get to the bottom of the issue, and if warranted to name and shame without fear.

Our Pledge

The Maravi Post is non-partisan, and in this initiative our sole intention is serving the interests of mother Malawi without fear, favour and bias.

MaraPost will therefore not dance to politicians’ tunes or seek favours from politicians.

We aren't an opposition party – call us an anti-corruption pressure group if you will – but we are not after office or anyone. Busting corruption is the sole reason for this forum’s creation, and busting corruption is the motto of the specialist zealous group of scribes /investigators behind this forum.

Sensationalism and slander has never been part of our vocabulary, and we will not change that. However the onus not to be associated with the shame that comes with corruption lies squarely on the people who against
the public good, insist on being greedy by abusing public trust.
