Malawi Carlsberg Cup: FAM excited with minnows progress to last 16

Fam commercial manager Casper JangaleBLANTYRE – Minnows thrashing of the Peoples team, Big Bullets and Blantyre United and progression to the round sixteen of the Carlsberg Malawi cup has excited Football of Association of Malawi (Fam), saying Super Eagles victory over Bullets shows there are no small teams in the competition.

Bullets and Blantyre United were on Saturday shown the exit doors by rookies Supers Eagles and Karonga Vendors, premier league teams from the northern region, respectively.

The people’s team lost 2-1 whereas Karonga Vendors cruised to the next round after beating Blantyre United 1-0.

Other super league teams that have also bowed out of the cup are Bvumbwe Research and Kamuzu Barracks.

The researchers lost 1-0 to Civo; spot kicks energized Kabwafu United to kill off the soldiers from Kamuzu Barracks 4-3 after a one-all tie after regulation time.

Mzuzu University (Mzuni) also won on penalties 4-3 to cruise past BNC Produsak.

“It is very interesting to see small teams beating big teams like Bullets and Blantyre United. There is stiff competition and teams have to fight gallantly to get the finals.

“We are happy because this shows that tournaments and cup are not for seemingly big teams. Super Eagles have just proved that football is not played on paper but rather on the ground.

“Teams battled it out for supremacy but by close of business on Sunday 16 teams matched to the next round, 16 teams were shown the exit door,” Fam Commercial Manager, Casper Jangale told Maravipost in an interview Sunday.

Jangale said football fanatics should expect exciting football and fascinating moments during the round sixteen as teams will have to book for quarter final places. This stage will decide the last 8 teams.

The must watch games in the round sixteen to played on November 3 and 4 include of current super league leaders Silver Strikers vs Red Lions, Standard Bank Cup winners Mighty Wanderers vs Blue Eagles, Civo vs Epac, Azam Tigers vs Moyale and Karonga Vendors vs Escom United.
