Chakwera dared to tame character assassination, infighting in MCP ahead of convention

Chakwera, Mumba (above), Chithyola, and Citizen Alliance presser (below): Chakwera now wants all to contest for the August elective convention

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The country’s civil rights group under the banner Citizen Alliance has challenged President Lazarus Chakwera to take a board step in resolving political infighting, character assassination engulfed in Malawi Congress Party (MCP) ahead of elective convention slated for August this year.

The grouping observes that MCP as current government driver must focus on restoring economic gains being noticed.

Citizen Alliance told the news conference in the capital Lilongwe on Tuesday afternoon, May 28, 2024 that ongoing political infighting in MCP prevent government from fully addressing pressing socio economic challenges.

The grouping cited character assassinations on Finance Minister Simplex Chithyola Banda, Speaker Gotani Hara, Vitumbiko Mumba.

“If you observe properly these public figures including Chithyola, Mumba, Hara and others are facing numerous character assassination causes are vying various positions in MCP’s August convention.

“They are peddled into political mud-slinging despite being behind Malawi’s economic and governance progress in the country. What will developmental partners say regarding to this political assassinations on individuals who are holders of public funds?, queried Fryson Chodzi one of the press conference holders.

Chodzi demands, “We are calling upon President Chakwera to address and resolve power struggles within MCP. These internal conflicts are impacting national development.

“Its crucial to restore order and unity within the party to ensure effective governance and progress for the country”.

Echoed the same Masauko Thawe observes that despite government making a lot of strides towards the social economic development of the country, “Such as its efforts to increase the foreign exchange reserves which has shown good results, there are still a number of issues affecting Malawians”.

Thawe adds, “Physical space remains constrained due to low domestic revenue collection, adding that enhancing tax collection and expanding the tax base will help in increasing government revenue and ensuring sustainable public financing”

He urges, “We are asking Chakwera-MCP government to address such challenges by among others focusing more on delivering essential public services such as health, education and infrastructure to improve the quality of life for everyone”.

Chakwera is yet to act on MCP infighting ahead of August convention as he has been also endorsed as Presidential candidate in 2025 polls.
