Does Gen Z Play Poker Differently? Insights into Their Gaming Preferences

It is no secret that casino floors are changing faster and faster with time, and we are seeing a big shift in how the games are played. Traditional slot machine use has been on the decline for the past few years, and a lot of casinos have been looking for new ways to appeal to a younger generation that doesn’t typically like gambling on a slot machine.

These recent changes have made it clear that younger generations, especially Gen Z, are not as likely to gamble as their elders used to be. That is why the ‘know your client’ model now needs to consider a new generation of players who view the casino floor and gambling in a completely different light.

Impact of the Mobile Casino Apps

Mobile casino apps have made casino gambling accessible to Gen Z. These platforms democratized gambling and brought the excitement of the casino directly to the fingertips of the new generation. The following key statistics were highlighted by a Forbes report on US gambling revenues.

  • For the first 11 months of the year 2022, the revenue amount was $54.93 billion.
  • The revenue amount grew at a growth rate of 13.5%.

One great thing about mobile casino apps is that they are accessible from just about anywhere, so one can enjoy diverse titles on their own terms. Of course, most of these apps are also social, in a way that people no longer have to walk into a casino anymore.

A New Gambling Friend: Social Media

Another area shaping Gen Z’s gambling behavior is social media. Different social media platforms have become a meetup point for young adults who share a common interest to play poker online. They share tips, celebrate victories, and even discuss losses on social media.

Influencers have a significant place in social media. Some are very good at game analysis and share information about their prediction of the outcome of different games with Gen Z on various social media platforms.

On one hand, social support could assist young people in understanding more about how to play a game like poker. It creates a group of supporters who also exert peer pressure over gambling participation. Therefore, in this respect, responsibility is critical.

Role of Technologies like AI and Metaverse

Technology is now viewed as more of a game-changer and not a buzzword in the tech world, limiting itself to the radical changes in gambling habits, more so with the tech-savvy and supposedly Gen Z. These people would seem very familiar against the charges of the AI legitimacy, not leaving, of course, the epicenter and impactful range that Gen Z has across gambling and gaming landscapes.

While artificial intelligence is about imbuing machines with the power of better decision-making and doing things that were always thought might be done only by human beings, in the gambling industry, it helps make games better and their player wiser about the decisions he is making – decisions that, now he would surely regret, he knows not.

The same story seems to replicate with the Metaverse. The Metaverse, for Gen Z, is nothing but a technical extension of reality. Spending time away in an online casino playing games with friends, visiting a poker tournament, or sitting in this digital universe that feels no different from the real world is fine.

Metaverse casinos are just another way technology shapes and changes the look of gaming for Gen Z.

Gaming Preferences of Gen Z

And those having been brought up in the world of the internet generally develop an interest in the fast-paced variations of poker – for example, Blitz online tournaments or short-hand cash games. Considering the speed at which Gen Z moves, they might feel that a traditional multi-hour live tournament, having long intermissions, is dead boring.

Poker is more about the experience for Gen Z; it is a game that should not just win, but enjoy too. What draws these players in is the camaraderie between them at the poker table, the challenge, and, of course, loads of fun.

Lastly, Gen Z is very informed and knows the technology well. And they treat poker in the same way as well. They love to use apps for training, hand analysis software, guides, and tutorials easily found online.

In the context of borderless attraction, arguably one of the most essential aspects that interests Gen Z is technology. This is because it enables the communication of fun and convenience. A casino is a social media community, just like any other.

If casinos are interested in becoming appealing to the generation of new gamblers, then they should make use of technology. But, during this process, generating safer and fairer practices of gambling should also be kept in mind.
